The rules have been amended from 01-05-11 so that competitors are not obliged to make challenges. The emphasis is now on responding to challenges. In other words, a competitor need not try to improve their position on the ladder if they have no desire to do so, but they must defend their position if challenged.

RULES

1. The organiser will place competitors on a ranking ladder. Each competitior will play a series of singles matches in order to try to improve their ranking on the ladder. New competitors joining the ladder will be given a ranking deemed appropriate by the organiser.

2. Competitors may challenge anyone up to three places above them on the ladder.

3. Competitors must accept at least one challenge in each of four designated periods (Mar/Apr, May/Jun, Jul/Aug, Sep/Oct) and this must be the earliest of the challenges received. Any player who does not complete this minimum requirement will automatically be relegated three places on the ladder, unless they can demonstrate that they had not received any challenges.

4. It is important that all challenges (whether played or not) must be entered in the challenge book at the club. A competitor can make as many challenges as they wish during a given two-month period.

5. If a challenge is accepted, a match date should be agreed and entered in the challenge book along with the eventual result.

6. A competitor who has accepted one challenge during a given two-month period may decline any other challenges made in that same period. However, if a challenge is declined, the challenger may insist that the match be "rolled over" and completed at the next opportunity, as long as the two players remain no more than three places apart on the ladder. In that case "declined & rolled over" should be entered in the challenge book and the player challenged cannot accept any other challenges until this outstanding match has been completed. The challenger, however, is free to complete another challenge while this match remains outstanding.

7. Each match shall consist of two regular tie-break sets, with a championship tie-break (up to 10) being played to decide the match if the score reaches one set all.

8. A lower ranked competitor who defeats a higher ranked competitor moves above them on the ladder.

9. These rules may be amended at any time, and the organiser will have the final say on any matter not provided for therein. Anyone wishing to be removed from the ladder should contact the organiser.
