CLUB NEWS

Saturday 28th August 2010 - FRIENDLY MATCH PROVIDES HELP FOR HERO'S
A fundraising friendly match between Kent Elms and David Lloyd (Basildon) has raised £380 for the forces charity, Help For Hero's. Organiser, Jackie Taylor, asked both teams to get into the mood by turning out in army combat gear; and a ferocious bunch they looked. Thanks go to Jackie, plus Gary Nicholls who led the Kent Elms team, Pete Clark who ran the barbecue, Bren Lincoln for decorating the bar in camouflage netting, and all the other helpers who provided food.

Friday 9th July 2010 - SUMMER LEAGUE LEAVES LADIES DISAPPOINTED
The Leigh & Westcliff summer league season ended in disappointment for our ladies with the first team only managing fourth spot, while the second team narrowly missed promotion on game count. Elsewhere, our men never really got going finishing fourth, fifth and fourth in divisions 2, 3 & 5 repectively. In mixed divisions 1, 2 & 5 our teams performed well finishing third, fourth and third respectively. However, in mixed division 3 we never got going and were relegated.

Saturday 5th June 2010 - A TOUCH OF SPAIN AT KENT ELMS
With the clubhouse suitably decorated and the sound of guitars coming through the speakers, a little bit of Spain arrived at Kent Elms as Pat Townsley continued her themed evenings with a Spanish Night. With help from Bren Lincoln, Dawn Collins and her own daughter, Pat laid on a vast array of extremely tasty Spanish food, together with a large bowl of Sangria. And amid all the eating and drinking there was Jan Thorpe acting as quiz master as he invited everyone to partake in a number of topical quizzes. The evening was rounded off with prizes going to Jo Hancock as the best dressed spanish lady, while the best dressed man prize went to Pete Clark who came as a very convincing Rafael Nadal.

Sunday 23rd May 2010 - ROYSTON LEADS FAMILY FUN AFTERNOON
Two weeks ago Kent Elms members were gathering to meet new coach Royston Kymberly. This time round it was family and friends, together with other interested parties, who were put through their paces by the new coach. On a scorching hot afternoon, mum's and dad's took to the courts alongside children as young as four, to try out their tennis skills before tucking into some tasty food which included hot dogs and burgers from the barbecue. This event was a precusor to the full coaching programme which is due to begin in June. Anyone interested in taking part in group coaching sessions at £5 per hour can email Pat Taylor at www.tayptrck@aol.com or telephone on 07910-363116.

Friday 21st May 2010 - CLOSE FIGHT AT QUIZ NIGHT
Kent Elms put in a great performance at the Leigh & Westcliff Tennis Association Diamond Anniversary Quiz Night where the usual relentless, mind-numbing, avalanche of trivia, was halted only briefly to allow the competitors to enjoy some tasty food. Although we were neck and neck with the leaders throughout the evening, in the end it was the team from Hadleigh Park who took the trophy, with Kent Elms finishing in third place.

Sunday 9th May 2010 - MEMBERS MEET THE NEW COACH
A new coaching initiative began at Kent Elms Tennis Club as members came along to meet the new coach, Royston Kymberly. Royston, assisted by son Kyle and Martin Paterson, ran a series of tennis drills and gave members tips on how they might improve their game. The coaching programme will continue on Sunday 23rd May with a family fun afternoon where members are invited to bring along their family, friends and any other interested parties who would like to give tennis a try, starting at 3pm.

Sunday 25th April 2010 - MARTIN MAKES IT A MIXED DOUBLE !
At the Leigh & Westcliff LTA Winter Tournament Finals, held at Invicta Tennis Club, Kent Elms Martin Needs, together with partner Sue Sergeant (Thorpe Bay), made it a double triumph by adding the winter mixed doubles title to the mixed title they won last summer. It was excitement all the way as they came from 4-1 down in the final set to beat Mark & Debbie Rose (Rayleigh) 7-6 4-6 6-4. In the men's doubles final Ryan Wilson & Bill Cooper (Rayleigh) also repeated their summer success beating Allan Steel & Jeremy Heales (Leigh) 6-2 7-6, and in the ladies doubles Sue Sergeant & Kris Newbery (Thorpe Bay) beat Ann Murray & Annemeik Binnenijk (Thorpe Bay) 6-3 7-6.

Saturday 17th April 2010 - GUEST STAR MYSTERY STUNS KARAOKE CROWD
They said it could not happen seven years in a row, but sadly they were proved wrong when the mystery guest once again failed to arrive at the Chinese Meal, Music Quiz & Karaoke Night. Amazingly, the special guest, who was due to fly back from Europe specially for the event, seemed to vanish into thin air. Many were left blaming the volcanic ash, while others dismissed it as just another phoney stunt. Whatever the real reason, the mystery seemed to deepen when reserve artist Edwina Buchan also failed to appear due to sickness (also caused by volcanic ash, perhaps?). The mystery seemed to be compounded even further when deputy reserve artist Andy Stone suddenly announced that he was also unable to sing because of a sore throat (caused by volcanic ash, no doubt). With nerves becoming ever more frayed, Jason McGinley finally stepped up to the mike and launched into Quando, Quando Quando, and in an instant the threat from volcanic ash was history. Very soon the place was rocking with performances which included Phil Stevens (Don't Look Back In Anger), Bren Lincoln & Mary Smith (Do That To Me One More Time), Martin Needs & Martin Powell (You're So Vain), Pat Taylor & Sally McGinley (Summer Nights), Sarah Stone & Sue Needs (Hey Mickey), Keith Smith (Dream Lover), Pat & John Rogers (Dancing Queen) and Diane Taylor & Marilyn Sharples (Lipstick On Your Collar).

Tuesday 13th April 2010 - KENT ELMS COACHING GETS A MAKEOVER
Coaching opportunities at Kent Elms are to move onto a more professional footing under the guidance of Elite Tennis Academy coach, Royston Kymberly. Our new coaching initiative will begin with a "Meet The Coach" afternoon on Sunday 9th May 2010, which will offer one hours free group coaching for interested members, starting at 3pm. Two weeks later, on Sunday 23rd May, there will be a family fun afternoon where members are invited to bring along their family, friends and any other interested parties who would like to give tennis a try, again starting at 3pm. These two introductory events will then be followed by a junior coaching programme which will begin on Sunday 6th June. There will also be a Junior Summer Camp during the school summer holidays from Monday to Friday 9am to 12 noon.

Wednesday 24th March 2010 - GARY & BREN TAKE OVER TOP JOBS
At the club AGM on Wednesday night, Gary Nicholls took over as Chairman of Kent Elms Tennis Club from Jan Thorpe who steps down after three years in office. In another important change, Bren Lincoln took over as Club Secretary from Mary Moxom who steps down after a magnificent 15 years in office. Mary has given up her position to reduce her work load but will continue to serve on the committee.

Sunday 14th March 2010 - WINTER LEAGUE ENDS IN DISAPPOINTMENT
A highly successful Leigh & Westcliff Winter League ended in disappointment after both our division 1 ladies and mixed teams entered the final week of the season with a chance of winning top honours. In ladies division 1 we were undefeated all season, but ended up losing out to Thorpe Bay after the snow forced us to conceded too many draws. Meanwhile, in mixed division 1 we went into the final week unbeaten before coming unstuck at Rayleigh, once again allowing Thorpe Bay to sneak in even though we had beaten them both home and away. Elsewhere, performances were generally solid. Our division 3 ladies finished 3rd and our mixed teams in divisions 2, 3, 4 & 5 finished 3rd, 4th, 4th and 2nd repectively with a special mention going to the team in division 5 for an excellent result. As usual our men found things a bit trickier with our teams in divisions 2 and 4 both finishing 4th. Commiserations go to our third men's team in division 6 who were relegated.

Saturday 13th March 2010 - MANDY & NELSON ARE FLOODLIGHT CHAMPIONS
Mandy White & Nelson Okomi kept the home flag flying by winning the McLellan-Perkins floodlight tournament which has been hosted by Kent Elms Tennis Club for the past 32 years. In the main event Mandy & Nelson (Kent Elms) beat Mark & Debbie Rose (Rayleigh) 6-3 7-6. Earlier, Steve Lloyd & Dot Monte (Rayleigh) took the honours in the Plate Event beating Jo Hancock & Kevin Harvey (Kent Elms) 6-3 6-2. For full results click Main Event or Plate Event.

Saturday 19th December 2009 - IT'S A WHITE CHRISTMAS PARTY
With six inches of snow on the ground, it was a particularly hardy group of members and friends who gathered for the Kent Elms Christmas Party. With a couple of fun games from Keith Smith and some delicious food, the back drop of snow helped create a very festive atmosphere. Pretty soon everyone was involved in performing some lunatic versions of their favourite carols, and with midnight approaching, Hanna Stevens arrived from another party, and the whole thing kept rolling on until 1.30am! All in all it was an excellent effort by all concerned.

Monday 14th December 2009 - PHIL IS NEW SINGLES CHAMPION
Phil Stevens is the new Kent Elms Men's Singles Champion after a titanic struggle with the defending champion, Nelson Okomi. After several years of under achieving at singles, Phil began confidently, taking the first set 6-4. However, Nelson clawed his way back into the match, winning the second set 6-3, and then serving for the title at 5-4 in the final set. With another disappointment beckoning, Phil refused to buckle, eventually winning the match 7-6 in a tie break. In the plate event, Richard Crews showed just how much his game has matured with a solid 6-3 7-5 win over Chris Rackham.

Friday 13th November 2009 - KENT ELMS TAKE A WINTER BREAK
It was with a sense of adventure that Pete Clark, Pat & Di Taylor, Phil & Hanna Stevens, Pat & John Rogers, and Bren Lincoln headed off to Devon for Kent Elms first winter break. Tennis seemed to be the last thing on everyones mind as the intrepid eight threw themselves into a non-stop week of golf, bowls, ten pin bowling, archery, pistol shooting, rifle shooting, snooker, swimming and various craft activities. The rest of the time was spent eating massive amounts of food and downing much alcohol. In the end Pat Rogers emerged as our star golfer, while Bren Lincoln won prizes at both archery and pistol shooting. A great time was had by all and everyone agreed that this is something they would all like to do again.

Saturday 31st October 2009 - THE LIVING DEAD COLLECT THEIR TROPHIES
The Leigh & Westcliff LTA Presentation Dinner Dance being held on Halloween could mean only one thing. A room full of the living dead, dressed up in dodgy outfits, and eating scary food. Once the trophies had been presented, a very frightening DJ suddenly started to play goulish music which resulted in dozens of zombies and several old witches attempting to cast their spells on the dance floor. It was all good clean fun which bravely went on beyond the bewitching hour.

Friday 23rd October 2009 - KNOCKOUT CUP SAGA ENDS IN TRIUMPH
One of the longest running knockout cup sagas of recent times has finally ended in triumph for Kent Elms. No one could forsee the problems that lay ahead when, for the first time in fourteen years, Kent Elms won through to all three knockout cup finals (Ladies, Men's & Mixed). The first sign of difficulty came with the realisation that all three finals were due to be played away against Rayleigh. Since Rayleigh do not have floodlights, and with the nights rapidly drawing in, it was impossible to play on any of the scheduled dates. The men managed to find an early weekend slot and Rayleigh took the first of the finals with an impressive 4-0 win. After much delay, another weekend slot was found for the ladies final, but when the match ended in a 2-2 draw, a play-off set could not be played because of fading light. Meanwhile, there was no sign of a date for the mixed final. When a date was finally agreed the match had to be cancelled half an hour before the start when it was discovered that there were no courts available! With time rapidly slipping by, the ladies eventually got together to complete the ladies cup final which Kent Elms won 6-3 in the play-off set. Since the knockout cups were now over five weeks late, it was decided that the mixed final showdown would be played under floodlights at Kent Elms. And what a final it was! Mandy White & Nelson Okomi scored a brilliant 6-2 7-6 win over Ryan Wilson & Lauren Duffield, and with Steff Haddrell & Phil Stevens standing at 6-7 7-5 in a titanic struggle with Debbie Rose & David Barham, Kent Elms took the mixed cup 3-1.

Saturday 3rd October 2009 - PETE & CYNTHIA DISH OUT THE TRIVIA
Once again, Pete Clark and Cynthia Collier were the hosts of another Kent Elms Quiz Night, where the usual frantic evening of quick fire trivia only eased up to allow everyone to partake in a delightful midway supper. In the end it was the table consisting of Malcolm & Jo Hancock, Edwina Collier, Norman McCoaut, Katy Cox, Phil Stevens and Nelson Okomi who triumphed in a very closely fought contest. As the evening came to a close, Pete and Cynthia made their familiar gesture of awarding almost everyone a prize.

Sunday 20th September 2009 - FIRST MAJOR TITLE FOR MARTIN
At the Leigh & Westcliff LTA Summer Tournament Finals, played at Southend Lawn Tennis Club, Kent Elms Martin Needs secured his first major success by winning the Mixed Doubles. Martin together with partner Sue Sergeant (Thorpe Bay) won an exciting three set battle 6-4 4-6 6-2 against mother and son partnership, Gill and Dan Sanderson (Westcliff Lawn). There was further successs for Kent Elms in the Ladies Doubles Plate where Bren Lincoln & Marilyn Sharples (Kent Elms) beat Sandra Ellis & Tricia Goddard (Wickford) 6-1 6-1, while in the Mixed Doubles Plate Pat Taylor (Kent Elms) and Lisa Gordon (Leigh) beat Allan Steel & Claire Elliott (Leigh) 6-2 6-4. In the Men's Singles Final Ryan Wilson (Rayleigh) took the title for the second year running, defeating James Holloway (Hadleigh Park) 6-0 6-0, while in the Ladies Singles, Nalandi Sharma-Ebdon (Westcliff Lawn) also won for the second year running, beating Sally Marsham (Southend Lawn) 6-3 6-0. In the Men's Doubles Ryan Wilson & Bill Cooper (Rayleigh) beat Dave Goodman & Cliff Warwick (Wickford) 6-3 6-1, and in the Ladies Doubles Ann Murray & Annemiek Binnendijk (Thorpe Bay) beat Sally Marsham (Southend Lawn) and Jackie Sirdifield (Thorpe Bay) 7-5 6-1.

Sunday 13th September 2009 - ANOTHER FULL HOUSE FOR CHAIRMAN'S DAY
It was a full house at Kent Elms as Chairman Jan Thorpe hosted another of his extremely popular Chairman's Days. Once again Norman and Edwina organised a fun tournament which saw Richard Crews and Marilyn Sharples emerge as winners with Ken Clark and Dawn Collins as runners-up. The event was rounded off with a magnificent buffet together a well earned drink around the bar.

Friday 10th July 2009 - MEN SLIP BACK INTO DIVISION 2
The Leigh & Westcliff Summer Leagues followed a similar pattern to the Winter Leagues as our men struggled to avoid relegation. After a bright start in division 1 we found ourselves in third spot at the halfway stage, before the wheels came off in the second half, and we hit the slippery slope back into division 2. The mens second team showed their fighting spirit by retaining their place in division 3 in fifth spot, while the third team sank without trace and are relegated to division 5. Our ladies first team got off to possibly their worst ever start in division 1, but came back to finish a creditable 3rd. Meanwhile, a very close fought battle in division 2 saw our ladies second team relagated. Our four mixed teams in divisions 1, 2, 3 & 5 were much more solid finishing third, fourth, third and third respectively. In particular, our team in division 5 were in first place for much of the season before faltering at the end.

Saturday 4th July 2009 - SUPERSTARS BANQUET CLOSES ANOTHER SUMMER SEASON
The 13th Superstars Banquet saw members and friends gather to celebrate the end of yet another summer season. Once again, a delightful four-course meal, together with a potent array of drinks, was broken up by a series of light hearted games. Excellent weather conditions allowed the gathering to spill out onto the courts where everyone joined in a frustrating test of ball skill and co-ordination. The Chairman, Jan Thorpe, thanked Pat & Di Taylor for organising the event, Bren Lincoln for decorating the tables, and Keith Smith for producing the games.

Saturday 2nd May 2009 - GUEST STAR CRISIS AT CHINESE MEAL & KARAOKE NIGHT
Once again the organisers were left stunned when, for the seventh year running, the mystery guest star failed to turn up at the annual Chinese Meal & Karaoke night. Although many of those attending were bitterly disappointed, a possible nasty situation was averted when Edwina Buchan leapt to her feet, and with Brenda Lincoln, Marilyn Sharples and Vera Cheeseman on backing vocals, she launched into an unbelievable version of Da Do Ron Ron. In no time at all, any thoughts of the missing guest star had been blown away by an amazing series of perfomances which included Debby & Bren Lincoln (Killing Me Softly), Andy Stone (Mandy), John Rogers & Pete Clark (Dance The Night Away), Hanna Stevens, Debby Lincoln & Pat Taylor (Fairy Tale Of New York), and Martin Needs & Andy Stone (The Green Green Grass Of Home). Perhaps the performance of the night came from Phil Stevens and the Table 1 choir with their stunning version of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Sunday 26th April 2009 - SUCCESS FOR MARTIN & KEVIN AT WINTER FINALS
At the Leigh & Westcliff Winter Finals, Martin Needs & Kevin Harvey (Kent Elms) won the Men's Doubles Plate, beating Chris Rackham & Steve Baker (David Lloyd) 6-2 6-3. In the other events, Lauren Duffield & Gemma Smith (Rayleigh) won the Ladies Doubles, beating Kate Bennett & Michelle Caldon (Hockley) 6-1 6-2, Neil Jacobs & Ryan Wilson (Rayleigh) won the Men's Doubles, beating Graham Wells & Jim Day (Southend Lawn) 7-6 6-7 6-2, and Joe Murray & Sue Sergeant (Thorpe Bay) won the Mixed Doubles beating Neil Jacobs & Lauren Duffield (Rayleigh) 6-3 6-3.

Wednesday 6th April 2009 - KNOCKOUT CUP FINALS ARE SHARED
Kent Elms and Thorpe Bay went head to head in both the Mixed and Ladies Winter Knockout Cup Finals. In the mixed final it was Kent Elms who took the honours after a closely fought match. However, Thorpe Bay took revenge with a convincing win in the ladies final.

Sunday 15th March 2009 - WINTER LEAGUE IS A STRUGGLE FOR THE MEN
Of the ten teams competing in the Leigh & Westcliff Winter League, it was our three men's teams who struggled, mainly due to injuries and absence. In Men's division 2 we could only finish fourth, while we were relegated in division 3, and finished fifth in division 6. Elsewhere, there were solid perfomances all round with our two ladies teams both finishing second in divisions 1 and 3, and our five mixed teams in divisions 1, 2, 3, 5 & 6 finishing third, third, fourth, second and third respectively.

Thurday 12th March 2009 - THORPE BAY v THORPE BAY VOTED DOWN
At the Leigh & Westcliff AGM, a proposed rule change which would allow a club to have two teams in any division has been voted down. The proposal was presented by Wickford and was an attempt to try to avoid teams becoming league locked. This is currently affecting teams from Thorpe Bay who last summer won 8 divisions, but were unable to have any team promoted because they already had teams in the division above.

Saturday 28th February 2009 - A MEXICAN DELIGHT
Those intrepid event organisers, Pat Townsley & Bren Lincoln, were at it again as they transformed the Kent Elms clubhouse into a little bit of Mexico for their Mexican Evening. As the guitar music played, members and friends began arriving, many dressed in dodgy mexican outfits, and sometimes carrying strange looking prickly structures which were reputed to be cactus plants. After a delicious 3 course mexican meal, and a couple of excellent quizzes, prizes were awarded to Pat Rogers for the best home-made cactus, to Diane Taylor as the best dressed mexican lady, and to Pete Clark as the best dressed mexican man.

Wednesday 31st December 2008 - IN WITH THE NEW YEAR
With reduced numbers this year, Jo Hancock generously decided to have the Kent Elms New Years Eve Party at her home. All participants brought along an item of food and drink so that the group was well nourished and well oiled by the time midnight arrived. Just like last year, Pete Clark & Cynthia Collier brought along a giant firework so that the evening finished off with a bang!

Saturday 20th December 2008 - PARTY TIME AT KENT ELMS
With the big day rapidly approaching, the Kent Elms Christmas Party gave members and friends a chance to exchange seasons greetings. There was two brilliant games provided by Keith Smith, together with some excellent food supplied by the members. Later in the evening a magnificent choir was formed to sing a variety of Christmas songs.

Saturday 15th November 2008 - NELSON RETAINS HIS TITLE
Nelson Okomi is Kent Elms Singles Champion for the second year in a row after a very close fought victory over Craig Giles. It has been a very impressive tournament for Craig who eliminated Phil Stevens in the earlier rounds, before giving Nelson a scare or two in the final. In the end it was Nelson who managed to raise his game when it mattered, to edge out his opponent 6-4 7-5.

Friday 17th October 2008 - WINNERS COLLECT THEIR TROPHIES
For the second year running, the annual Leigh & Westcliff LTA Presentation Dinner Dance was held at Saxon Hall in Aviation Way. A large contingent from Kent Elms went along and enjoyed a good meal before stepping up to collect a nice array of trophies. This was followed by Paul Brandon's ever popular disco, which kept most people on the dance floor until late.

Sunday 21st September 2008 - PHIL BATTLES THROUGH THE PAIN BARRIER
At the Leigh & Westcliff LTA Summer Tournament Finals, played at Thorpe Bay Tennis Club, Kent Elms Phil Stevens battled through the pain barrier to win the Mixed Doubles title with Steff Haddrell, beating Mark & Debbie Rose (Rayleigh) 6-1 6-3. Earlier, Phil had dislocated his shoulder while partnering clubmate Nelson Okomi in the Men's Doubles Final, before losing 6-2 0-6 6-2 to James Holloway & Will Roberts (David Lloyd). Mandy White & daughter Holly (Kent Elms) made it two in a row in the Ladies Doubles by beating clubmates Julie Rackham & Lisa Gordon 6-0 2-6 6-2. This was the second disppointment for Lisa who had earlier lost the Ladies Singles final 6-1 6-4 to Nalandi Sharma-Ebdon (Hadleigh Park). Marilyn Sharples & Danny Lovett (Kent Elms) put up a brave fight in the Mixed Doubles Plate before going down 4-6 6-2 6-3 to Bob Chapman & Nicola Thain (Wickford). In another close contest, Craig Giles & Andy Pond (Kent Elms) put up strong resistance in the Men's Doubles Plate before going down 6-1 7-6 to Graham Wells & Jim Day (Southend Lawn). In the Men's Singles Final Ryan Wilson (Rayleigh) took the title for the first time defeating Neil Jacobs (Rayleigh) 6-3 6-0.

Saturday 20th September 2008 - QUIZ TIME WITH PETE & CYNTHIA
Once again it was quiz time at Kent Elms as Pete Clark & Cynthia Collier fed us a large dose of trivia, together with a nice portion of fish and chips. The questions came thick and fast with the table consisting of Marilyn & Chris Sharples, Danny & Linda Lovett, Jan Thorpe & Pat Townsley coming out winners. However, just like last year, there were no losers as everyone was given a prize!

Sunday 7th September 2008 - ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CHAIRMAN'S DAY
It was another enjoyable occasion for the 35 members who turned out for Jan Thorpe's second Chairman's Day. The afternoon included a fun tournament organised by Norman McCouat together with plenty of food and drink. The event was also enjoyed by special guest David Rudkin, who travelled down from the midlands to celebrate 50 years of friendship with Jan.

Friday 22nd August 2008 - ANOTHER CUP DOUBLE FOR KENT ELMS
In the summer knockout cup competitions Kent Elms repeated their winter cup double by winning both the Ladies and Mixed Knockout Cups. In the Ladies final we took on Rayleigh, while the Mixed final was against Thorpe Bay. In each case victory came in a play-off set after both finals ended 2-2.

Wednesday 16th July 2008 - CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDERS FINISH THE SEASON
In spite of the awful weather, it was a highly successful summer season for Kent Elms Tennis Club who finished the season with critical championship deciders in both Mixed division 1 and Ladies division 1. Although we were unable to get the result we wanted in either of these matches, nothing could detract from the solid perfomances of our teams in all divisions. In Mixed divisions 1, 2, 3 & 5 our teams all finished 2nd, while our Ladies in divisions 1 & 2 finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Our Men's first team have made it back into division 1 after finishing 2nd behind league locked Thorpe Bay, while our other two men's teams both consolidated their places in divisons 3 & 4.

Saturday 5th July 2008 - SUPERSTARS BANQUET ENDS A WET SEASON
The 12th Superstars Banquet served food and drink a plenty as the club gathered to celebrate what was a highly successful season, in spite of another summer of awful weather. A fabulous four course meal, with as much wine and beer as you could drink, was accompanied by the usual fun quiz which was played between the courses. Everyone was pleased that the Chairman, Jan Thorpe, was able to attend after recently undergoing a hip replacement operation. He thanked Keith Smith (quiz), Di Taylor (food) and Pat Taylor (admin) for organising the event.

Saturday 21st June 2008 - CREAM TEA WITH NORMAN & EDWINA
Members arriving for social tennis where greeted with a mouth watering display of food as Norman McCouat and Edwina Buchan once again invited everyone to join them for a traditional cream tea. The tennis was brought to a temporary halt at 2.30pm as Norman & Edwina began their service. There were fruit scones, fresh strawberries, both whipped and clotted cream, together with a choice of rasberry, strawberry or victoria plum jam. Tea or coffee was served to order. The Secretary, Mary Moxom, thanked Norman & Edwina for all their hard work and generosity.

Sunday 27th April 2008 - KENT ELMS DOMINATE WINTER FINALS
Kent Elms Tennis Club were delighted to be hosts of the 23rd Leigh & Westcliff Winter Championships but even more delighted when their players took all the top honours. In the Ladies Doubles, Mandy White & her daughter Holly got things underway by beating their Kent Elms team mates Jo Hancock & Steff Haddrell 7-5 6-1. In the Men's Doubles, Kent Elms old stagers Pat Taylor & Terry Savage defied the odds to beat clubmates Phil Stevens & Nelson Okomi 6-3 3-6 7-6, while in the Mixed Doubles, Kent Elms duo Phil Stevens & Steff Haddrell saw off the challenge of Pat Taylor & Lisa Gordon 6-3 6-2. Kent Elms enjoyed further success in the Ladies Doubles Plate where Julie Rackham & Lisa Gordon beat Lauren Duffield & Gemma Smith (Leigh) 6-2 6-2. In the Men's Doubles Plate, Dave Goodman & Cliff Warwick (Wickford) beat Stewart Clarke & Bob Chapman (Wickford) 6-0 6-0, and in the Mixed Doubles Plate Dave Goodman & Tricia Goddard (Wickford) beat Andrew Gardiner & Jane Hunter (Leigh) 6-1 6-1.

Wednesday 23rd April 2008 - KENT ELMS MAKE IT A CUP DOUBLE
It was yet another titanic struggle as Kent Elms took on Thorpe Bay in the final of the Ladies Winter Knockout Cup. Mandy White & Sharon Scarf got us off to a great start by beating Kris Newberry & Ann Murray 6-4 7-5 before the visitors hit back with Sue Sargent & Annemiek Binnendyk beating Jo Hancock & Steff Haddrell 7-6 6-2. However, the cup was secured when Mandy & Steff teamed up to beat Sue & Kris 6-0 in a stunning play-off set. This win follows last weeks victory in the Mixed Winter Knockout Cup where we defeated Leigh Tennis Club in a rain affected final. The key to this success was a fabulous semi-final win at Thorpe Bay which also ended in stalemate after Phil Stevens & Steff Haddrell defeated Geoff Burdett & Sue Sergent 7-5 4-6 6-4 and Nigel & Mandy White went down 6-3 3-6 4-6 to Alan Rayner & Sally Magerison. However, a glorious victory was secured when Mandy & Phil teamed up to beat Alan & Sue 6-2 in the play-off set.

Saturday 19th April 2008 - MORE GUEST STAR MISERY AT CHINESE MEAL & KARAOKE NIGHT
The organisers could hardly believe their bad luck when, for the sixth year running, the mystery guest star failed to turn up at the annual Chinese Meal & Karaoke night. Remarkably the gathered masses showed little sign of anger and many admitted that it was not really a surprise. In less time than it takes to get a firm grip on your chop sticks, four brave damsels had formed themselves into a girl group, and with Brenda Lincoln, Marilyn Sharples & Vera Cheesman on backing vocals, Edwina Buchan took the lead with an unforgettable version of Daydream Believer. In no time at all the missing guest star was forgotten and everyone was in raptures as Jason McGinley belted out Saturday Night At The Movies. This was rapidly followed by a number of classic performances which included Pat & John Rogers (Dancing Queen), Andy Stone (Quando, Quando, Quando), Nelson Okomi (Rivers Of Babylon), Brenda Lincoln & Vera Cheesman (Let It Be), and Martin Needs, Jason McGinley & Andy Stone (Hey Jude). Perhaps the performance of the night came from rocking John Rogers who gave a hysterical impression of Mick Jagger doing Brown Sugar.

Saturday 5th April 2008 - PIZZA, PASTA . . . AND SO MUCH MORE
It was another gloriously successful night for organisers Pat Townsley, Brenda Lincoln and Jan Thorpe, as the themed evenings at Kent Elms continued with an Italian Night. There was a wonderful array of home cooked food with, of course, pizza and pasta, together with a delicious selection of sweets, giving members and friends the true taste of Italy. There was even the traditional Italian washing line overhead bearing an intriguing array of laundry, and also some games which included an Italian language test. Well done the organisers.

Sunday 30th March 2008 - KENT ELMS TRAVEL TO BILLERICAY
The sun came out just in time as Kent Elms Tennis Club hit the road and travelled to Billericay Tennis Club for a friendly match. Competition was fierce as six mixed pairs from each club competed over twelve eighteen minute sessions. An excellent afternoons play was rounded off with food and drink provided by the Billericay team. Kent Elms was represented by Mandy & Nigel White, Phil & Hanna Stevens, Chris & Julie Rackham, Jo Hancock, Pat Townsley, Brenda Lincoln, Marilyn Sharples, Trevor Brealey, Jason McGinley & Gary Nichols.

Sunday 16th March 2008 - WINTER LEAGUE PERFORMANCES ARE SATISFACTORY
Although there have been some disappointments, it was generally agreed that the performances of our ten teams in the Leigh & Westcliff Winter League were satisfactory. In the mixed league our first team pressed Thorpe Bay strongly, but had to settle for second place after two matches were agreed draws due to inclement weather. The second and third teams also perfomed well finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Our team in division 5 were very unfortunate when the final match of the season produced the only result which could relegate them. The good news is that this makes way for our team in division 6 to be promoted, which is a great achievement for them as the three girls have just moved up from the off-peak section. Our men's teams all did well finishing 2nd in both divisions 2 & 3 and 4th in division 6. In ladies division 1 Thorpe Bay won for the first time ending our record run of 7 successive wins. Sadly, our Ladies in division 2 have been relegated.

Saturday 15th March 2008 - GARDINER & DUFFIELD MAKE IT THREE IN A ROW
It was Leigh versus Kent Elms in the finals of our winter floodlight tournament, formerly known as the Doreen McLellan Tournament, but now renamed the McLellan-Perkins Trophy. There was also a new organising team of Pat Townsley & Jo Hancock. The name and the organisers may be new, but the weather was familiar. It rained most of the evening which meant that all competitors, together with umpires Jo Hancock and Dawn Collins, and scorer Norman McCoaut, took a good soaking. There were no such problems inside the clubhouse where a large crowd of Leigh and Kent Elms supporters enjoyed the two matches in warmth and comfort and with the added benefit of much food and drink. In the end it was victory for both Leigh pairs. In the main event Chris Gardiner & Lauren Duffield (Leigh) made it three wins in a row as they cruised to a 6-2 6-2 over Phil Stevens & Steff Haddrell (Kent Elms). Earlier, the plate final had been a real cliffhanger with Alan Steel & Clair Elliot (Leigh) just edging out Kevin Harvey & Julie Rackham (Kent Elms) 6-4 4-6 7-6. For full results click

Friday 28th September 2007 - DINNER DANCE MOVES TO AVIATION WAY
Saxon Hall, in Aviation Way, was the new venue for the annual Leigh & Westcliff LTA Presentation Dinner Dance, instead of the usual Hollywood Restaurant. The thirteen members and friends from Kent Elms who went along thought the new surroundings were extremely pleasant, although the main hall was smaller than the Hollywood. A very good meal was followed by the presentation of League, Cup and Tournament trophies. One thing that remained the same was Paul Brandon's disco which kept most people on the dance floor until 1am.

Sunday 15th July 2007 - NOT SO SECRET 40TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR TREVOR
Members and friends gathered at Kent Elms Tennis Club to attend a "surprise" 40th birthday celebration for Trevor Brealey. In spite of the best efforts of wife Jane and close friend Jerry Hamilton, it was generally agreed that this was the least secret birthday party ever. On the positive side, Jane did a terrific job with the food, and the weather was absolutely brilliant. Trevor is now an official member of the "old farts" club.

Saturday 14th July 2007 - A SEASON OF CONSOLIDATION FOR KENT ELMS
The 2007 summer season has ended with Kent Elms Mens Division 1 team slipping back into Division 2 after losing out in a relegation battle with Southend Lawn. Meanwhile, our other two mens teams consolidated their positions in Divisions 3 & 4 following promotion last year. In Ladies Division 1 we had to settle for second place after our usual battle with Thorpe Bay, while in Division 2 we did well to finish third. We retained our positions in the top three mixed divisions after finishing fourth, third and fifth respectively, while in Mixed Division 5 we perfomed exceptionally well in finishing third.

Everyone was then invited to help themselves to a magnificent feast which included salmon, cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, together with a dazzling selection of cakes. The Chairman, Jan Thorpe, thanked the hard working duo for providing such a generous gesture of hospitality.

Steff Haddrell & Julie Rackham got off to a flying start against Sue Sergent & Heather Bell, before the Thorpe Bay pair fought back to make it one set all. This is the third time that Kent Elms Ladies have won this trophy in the last four years.

Saturday 21st April 2007 - GUEST STAR DISASTER AT CHINESE MEAL & KARAOKE NIGHT
It was a case of Deja Vu for a hardy band of music lovers when, for the fifth year running, the mystery guest star failed to appear at the Kent Elms Chinese Meal & Karaoke Night. As on previous occasions, the assembled masses refused to be disappointed. Before anyone could say "I want my money back", Edwina Buchan had leapt to her feet to fill the breach with her mesmorizing rendition of "These Boots Are Made For Walking". And before the applause had time to die away, John Rogers was letting rip with his own personalised version of "All Right Now". Thereafter came a whole string of indescribable performances which included Peter Clark & Chris Sharples (Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen), Bren Lincoln & Mary Smith (That Old Devil Called Love), Pat Rogers & Vera Cheeseman (Up On The Roof), and Margaret Ward & David Cheeseman (The House Of The Rising Sun). A further extra special mention should be given to Edwina Buchan for her version of "Fun Fun Fun" which she went on to complete even though the words failed to appear on the screen. However, most observers would agree that the highlight of the evening came with a heartrending version of "Love On The Rocks" by Phil Stevens & Andy Stone which left a large section of the audience in tears.

Saturday 3rd March 2007 - IT'S A SURPRISE 60TH FOR BREN
Kent Elms Tennis Club was packed to the rafters for a surprise party to celebrate Bren Lincoln's 60th birthday. Daughter, Debby, lured her unsuspecting mum to the club where Pat Townsley was supposed to be having a quick drink with those who couldn't make her anniversary celebrations scheduled for the next day. Much food and drink was followed by a comic look at Bren's life over the past 60 years. Thanks go to all the helpers, particularly Pat Townsley & Jan Thorpe who manned the bar throughout the evening. Thanks also to all those who successfully kept the secret!

Saturday 3rd February 2007 - INVICTA REGAIN QUIZ NIGHT TITLE
Kent Elms have failed to defend their title at the Leigh & Westcliff Trivia Championship held this year at Hockley Tennis Club.
